Training

Youth Protection

  • Youth Protection training is required for all registered volunteers.
  • New leaders are required to take Youth Protection training before they submit an application for registration. The certificate of completion for this training must be submitted at the time application is made and before volunteer service with youth begins.
  • Youth Protection training must be taken every two years. If a volunteer’s Youth Protection training record is not current at the time of recharter, the volunteer will not be reregistered.

To take Youth Protection Training

Log on to MyScouting and take the training. Be sure to have your member ID number. The number can be found on your Boy Scouts of America membership card.
If you do not know your member ID number, contact your unit leader or committee chairman. Your council can also assist.

A person does not have to be a registered volunteer or have an ID number to take Youth Protection training. To take the training, log in to MyScouting and create an account. From the MyScouting portal, click on E-Learning and take the Youth Protection training. Upon completion, print a certificate and submit it with an application or submit to the unit leader for processing at the local council.

If you have taken Youth Protection training online but did not input your member ID number, please log on to MyScouting and input your member ID in the My Profile section so the training will be linked to your records.

If you have taken Youth Protection training within the past two years but did not take the course online, log on to MyScouting to ensure your records are up-to-date, or contact your council for verification that your Youth Protection training records are accurate.

Assistant Scoutmaster Training

Required

  • Youth Protection: Offered on-line
  • Archdiocese of Atlanta Volunteer Packet Complete Archdiocese of Atlanta Volunteer Packet and turn into SPC office. This is not necessary if you’ve filed out this paperwork to volunteer at a catholic church or a catholic school. Please just let us membership @ troop1134.org know who has your volunteer paperwork. This step MUST BE done (no exceptions) since St. Peter Chanel is our charter organization. (for complete Archdiocese packet… click here) Note: you’ll need to watch a video (it’s online) and then fill out a questionnaire on it.
  • Scoutmaster Specific (BSLST): Mandatory for Troop Position
  • Intro to Outdoor Leader Skills (ITOLS): Mandatory for Troop Position

Optional

First Aid, CPR, Safe Swim, Safety Afloat, Climb On Safely, Weather Hazards Training, and Trek Safely classes While these are not Mandatory to get the trained strip… many troop outings must have a trained leaders in one or more of these courses to be compliant with BSA Required standards.

(i.e. Before a BSA group may engage in an excursion, expedition, or trip on the water (canoe, raft, sailboat, motorboat, rowboat, floating in an inner tube, or other craft), adult leaders for such activity must complete Safety Afloat Training, No. 34159, have a commitment card, No. 34242, with them, and be dedicated to full compliance with all ninepoints of Safety Afloat.)

Troop Committee Member Training

Required

  • This is Scouting: (also known as New Leader Essentials): Offered on-line

Optional

Online Classes can be taken from the comfort of your home can be taken on the BSA On-line Training Center – on-line classes for Youth Protection Training, Fast Start to Boy Scouting, Safe Swim, Safety Afloat, Safe Swim Defense, This is Scouting (replaces New Leader Essentials), and others.

 

Parent Volunteer Training

Required

    These courses can help adult leaders deliver quality Scouting experiences to youth. A log-in is required, however anyone may create a user account and view the courses. Registered members of the BSA may provide their member numbers (as part of the user profile) to receive credit. Parents can create a user account without having a member number.

 

Den Chief Training

The Den Chief is a Boy Scout from a nearby troop who, usually, has achieved at least the rank of First Class. The Den Chief is a trained leader who assists a Den Leader in the running of a Den. Instructor Lead Courses

New Leader Essentials (NLE)

This course is also called This is Scouting. Each leader only needs to attend NLE once. All 2.5 hour NLE trainings are open to leaders from any BSA program (Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing Scouts, and Varsity Scouts). $3 course fee will be collected at the class. Pre-registration is required

Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster Leadership Training (SALT)

Learn how to be an effective troop leader. From program items to the patrol method to being an effective resource for the boys. This $10 class is offered in three 3 hour evening sessions. You must attend all 3 sessions to complete the class. New Leader Essentials is a pre-requisite.

To be considered a Trained Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmaster, you must complete BOTH SALT and ITOLS.

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (ITOLS)

Learn the scoutcraft skills needed to advance to First Class by essentially being a scout yourself. This class includes a 4 hour afternoon orientation session and a weekend camping outing. The class fee is $25. Your patrol will incur additional costs for meals for the outing. New Leader Essentials is a pre-requisite. Prior completion of SALT is recommended. To be considered a Trained Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmaster, you must complete BOTH SALT and ITOLS.
